Burlesque by Thomas Edison

I found this snippet of vintage film on the Library of Congress web site and all I can think after viewing the disclaimer at the begining is,

Do you think this young lady has "Property of Thomas Edison" tattooed anywhere on her person?

Property of Thomas Edison

I watched a PBS show (I think it was PBS, it was a while ago but it was very well produced so in my mind it must have been PBS...) on robotics a few years back and an interesting factoid that their reporters found was that the greatest leaps forward in human simulated robotics (ie. robots that look like people and not just random mechanical arms like the kinds of robots that put cars together in Detroit) have been funded primarily through support from the sex industry.
I remember one of the scientists interviewed saying that it was weird but that was where the money can be found for research and study so along with making simulated human brains in the persuit of science, simulated human naughty bits are also produced in the persuit of something far more base in origin...

It seemed to me after watching that program that modern science and smut are cozy bedfellows but it also seems after watching the above vintage film clip, that the partnership between the two,. is nothing new.

In fact, far from surprising me as it does, the partnership should seem downright old fashioned...
